Bank holiday weekends are made for getting outside, slowing the pace down, and making the most of a short break close to home. Whether you are heading for the coast in Bournemouth, exploring the dramatic scenery of Dorset, or wandering the woodland paths and open spaces of Hampshire, the best camera kit is the gear that helps you enjoy the day without weighing you down.

That is where a compact, versatile setup comes into its own. When you are out with family, moving between locations, or trying to make the most of changing light, you want equipment that is easy to carry, quick to use, and ready for everything from sweeping landscapes to spontaneous moments along the way.

The OM System OM-3 is a particularly appealing choice for this kind of weekend. It is built for photographers who want to stay mobile, travel light, and still enjoy a creative shooting experience. For walks, day trips, and family adventures, that balance of portability and capability makes a real difference.

One of the biggest reasons people choose OM System is the compact nature of the kit. A smaller body and lens combination means less to carry, which is especially useful when you are out for hours at a time or moving around with children, bags, and picnic gear. It is the kind of camera that feels like part of the day rather than a burden on it.

There is also the practical advantage of the Micro Four Thirds system. It is a strong option for photographers who value a lightweight setup without giving up the flexibility to capture wide scenes, portraits, and detail shots. For coastal views, countryside paths, and family moments in natural light, that versatility is a real asset.

The OM-3 also suits people who like a more considered, hands-on shooting style. It is the kind of camera that encourages you to slow down, notice the details, and enjoy the process of making images rather than rushing through them. For a bank holiday away from routine, that can be part of the appeal.

Paired with the OM System OM-3 with ED 12-45mm F4.0 PRO lens, it becomes an especially capable travel companion. The lens range is ideal for everyday shooting, giving you enough flexibility for landscapes, group shots, and close-up details without needing to pack a full bag of optics.

Cameras for the weekend

If you want a small but highly capable APS-C option, the Sony a6700 with 16-50mm kit lens is a strong all-round choice. It suits photographers and families who want a lightweight setup that can keep up with a busy day out, from seaside walks to countryside stops.

For those who want full-frame quality and a more premium do-it-all kit, the Sony A7 IV with 24-105mm G lens is a standout option. It is ideal if you want one camera that can handle landscapes, portraits, and travel photography with ease.

Peak Design for easy carrying

Accessories matter just as much as the camera itself when you are out for the day. The Peak Design Capture Clip is a smart option for anyone who wants their camera secure but instantly accessible while walking.

The Peak Design Leash is another practical favourite, especially for photographers who want a slim, unobtrusive strap that is easy to carry and quick to pack away. It works well for relaxed days out where comfort and simplicity are the priority.

For those who prefer a fuller carry solution, Peak Design straps offer a dependable way to keep your camera ready without making the day feel overcomplicated. And if you need somewhere to keep everything organised, Peak Design bags are a natural fit for bank holiday adventures, giving you space for camera gear, batteries, and the little extras that make a day run smoothly.

Ready for the long weekend

A good bank holiday is often about simple things done well: a walk by the sea, a family picnic, a scenic drive, or a full day exploring somewhere new. Bournemouth, Dorset, and Hampshire all offer the kind of locations that turn a short break into something memorable.

With the right camera gear, you can stay light on your feet and still bring home images that capture the feel of the weekend. From the portable OM System OM-3 to the versatile Sony a6700 and Sony A7 IV, and from Peak Design straps to carry solutions, these are the kinds of products that make it easier to enjoy the adventure and document it at the same time.

For bank holiday escapes, local days out, and family trips that deserve to be remembered, Castle Cameras has the kit to help you travel lighter and shoot better.

Built for the Wild

If you already shoot wildlife photography, you’re closer to filmmaking than you might think. The same instincts matter: waiting for the moment, reading behaviour, understanding light, and knowing when to stay still. The difference is that filmmaking lets you stretch those moments out and tell a fuller story.

Filming with purpose

When choosing a camera for wildlife filmmaking, there’s far more to consider than with a standard photography setup. Wildlife video demands reliability, adaptability, and performance in unpredictable conditions — and the better your research, the better your results in the field.

We’ve put together three cameras we highly recommend for nature and wildlife video work. These aren’t beginner cameras, and honestly, for this kind of work, you probably don’t want beginner gear. Here’s why.

Filming wildlife means dealing with constantly changing environments. You need a camera that can handle harsh weather, extreme lighting conditions, low-light scenes, and fast-moving subjects that often need to be slowed down and tracked in post-production.

The cameras used by productions like National Geographic are built to handle all of those challenges at once.

Take this example: you’ve always wanted to film marmots high in the Alps. Reaching them means hiking at altitude, so camera weight matters. The weather can shift instantly from sunshine to rain or snow, making weather sealing essential. Then, once you finally spot your subject, sunlight reflects harshly off the terrain, creating difficult exposure conditions. A camera with strong dynamic range and the ability to shoot in LOG gives you the flexibility to recover highlights and balance footage in post.

And when those marmots suddenly sprint for cover — possibly your only chance to capture the shot — high frame rates become critical. Shooting at 60fps, 120fps, or higher in high resolution allows you to slow footage down smoothly and crop in without sacrificing quality.

The cameras and lenses we’ve selected below are chosen with all of these real-world challenges in mind, helping you spend less time researching gear and more time capturing the wild.

The camera matters

For filmmakers stepping into the wild, the best camera is usually one that balances image quality, reliability, and portability.

The Sony FX3 is a strong choice for filmmakers who want a compact body with excellent low-light performance, 4K 120fps slow motion, fast autofocus, and a cooling system built for long recording sessions. It is especially useful for dawn, dusk, forests, and safari-style conditions where light changes quickly.

The Nikon Z8 is ideal for Nikon users who want a powerful hybrid body. Its 45.7MP stacked sensor, 8K recording, 4K 120fps, and subject detection autofocus make it excellent for both stills and video. It suits filmmakers who want one camera that can do everything without feeling like a compromise.

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II is another excellent option, especially for users who value colour, autofocus, and strong all-round performance. Its 8K video, 4K 120fps, and Canon’s subject tracking make it a serious tool for wildlife and adventure work.

The lens does the real work

If the camera is the brain, the lens is the eye.

For wildlife filmmaking, reach matters. You need to stay far enough away that animals behave naturally, while still making the viewer feel close to the action. That is where telephoto zooms become essential.

For Sony users, the FE 200-600mm is the standout wildlife lens. It offers huge reach, internal zoom, strong stabilisation, and reliable autofocus for birds, safari scenes, and distant subjects.

The 100-400mm GM is a lighter, more flexible option for travel, handheld work, and environmental wildlife shots.

For Nikon users, the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm is the obvious wildlife workhorse. It gives you long reach, stabilisation, and a practical balance of performance and value.

The Z 100-400mm S is better if you want a more versatile lens for both stills and cinematic video.

For Canon users, the RF 100-500mm L is one of the best all-round wildlife lenses available, with excellent sharpness, autofocus, and portability. If you need more reach, the RF 200-800mm opens up a different kind of shooting, especially for birds and distant behaviour.

Support gear is not optional!!!

A good wildlife setup is not just camera and lens. Once you start filming properly, support gear becomes part of the story.

A fluid video head makes a huge difference. It gives your pans and tilts a smooth, controlled feel that a ball head simply cannot match. That matters when you are tracking movement in the landscape or following an animal without making the shot feel shaky.

A solid tripod is just as important. In wildlife work, you may spend hours waiting for a few seconds of action, so stability matters more than convenience. A tripod that holds steady in wind, uneven ground, and long-lens shooting conditions is worth every penny.

This is a great place to start: Sirui SH-15 Tripod with Video Head

Power and monitoring

If you are filming for long sessions, small accessories quickly become essential.

An external monitor helps you check focus, exposure, and framing far more clearly than a rear screen. That becomes especially useful in hides or when shooting in difficult light.

Here is our recommendation: Atomos Ninja TX GO 5-inch monitor-recorder

A V-mount battery system is a smart upgrade for longer sessions. It keeps your camera, monitor, and accessories running without constantly swapping tiny batteries. That is the kind of thing that makes real field work easier and less stressful.

This is our go to : Smallrig 4292 V-Mount Battery Mini VB99 Pro

The real lesson

The biggest mistake people make is thinking wildlife filmmaking is about owning a cinema rig. It is not.

It is about carrying the right kit, understanding the light, staying patient, and letting nature happen on its own terms. The best gear helps you stay out of the way, work more steadily, and capture moments that feel honest.

That is what makes a wildlife film feel alive.

Starting your kit

If you are building your first wildlife filmmaking setup, keep it simple:

A strong hybrid camera body.

A telephoto zoom with enough reach.

A fluid head and tripod you can trust.

Good batteries and enough storage.

An external monitor to get critical focus.

Start there, and you will have a kit that can grow with you.

Final thought

Built for the wild means more than being tough enough to survive the field. It means being ready when the field finally gives you something worth filming.

That is the real heart of wildlife filmmaking: patience, purpose, and the right tools to tell the story well.

Fujifilm film recipes, also known as custom film simulations, are one of the standout features of Fujifilm X Series cameras. Built on Fujifilm’s renowned colour science, these recipes allow photographers to create a finished look straight out of camera, reducing the need for editing and making photography more intentional.

In this guide, we’re sharing a beautiful travel-focused Fujifilm film recipe called Wanderlight, created by travel creator @thechaosdiaries using Classic Chrome on the Fujifilm X-T50.

Whether you’re new to Fujifilm or already a Classic Chrome fan, this recipe is designed to help you achieve soft, natural travel images with minimal effort.

What Are Fujifilm Film Recipes?

Fujifilm film recipes are custom JPEG settings built on top of Fujifilm’s built-in Film Simulations, such as Classic Chrome, Velvia, Provia, Astia and Acros.

By adjusting parameters like contrast, colour, grain, white balance and sharpness, photographers can tailor the look of their images in-camera. The result is a consistent, film-inspired aesthetic without relying on post-processing software.

Why Photographers Love Film Recipes

Images are ready straight out of camera

Less time editing, more time shooting

Consistent colour and tone across a shoot

Ideal for travel, street and lifestyle photography

This approach is particularly popular with Fujifilm users who want a slower, more considered shooting experience.

Introducing Wanderlight – A Classic Chrome Film Recipe

Classic Chrome is known for its muted tones and documentary-style rendering, making it a favourite for storytelling and travel photography.
Why Use Fujifilm Film Recipes Instead of Editing?

One of the biggest advantages of Fujifilm cameras is the ability to commit to a look before you press the shutter. Film recipes like Wanderlight encourage photographers to think more intentionally about colour and tone at the moment of capture.

For many photographers, this means:

Get Ready for Autumn & Winter ’25 Photography

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns colder, Autumn and Winter bring unique opportunities for photographers. From golden leaves and crisp frosty mornings to festive night scenes, this time of year rewards those who are prepared for the conditions. With the right kit, you can stay comfortable, protect your gear, and keep shooting even when the weather has other plans.

Here are a few of our recommended accessories for making the most of your Autumn and Winter photography:

Stay Dry: Rain Protection for Your Camera

A sudden downpour doesn’t have to end your shoot. With a rain cover, you can keep your camera safe and dry while still capturing the atmosphere of a rainy day.

Think Tank Emergency Rain Cover (Medium) – A compact, lightweight option that slips easily into your bag, ready for unexpected showers.

OpTech Rainsleeve (x2) – An affordable, simple solution that provides instant protection and comes as a pack of two.

Think Tank Hydrophobia D 24-70 V3 Rain Cover – Designed for professional use, this cover offers a snug, weatherproof fit for DSLR and mirrorless cameras with a 24–70mm lens attached.

Light & Warmth: Multi-Tasking Torch

Autumn and Winter often mean shooting in low light – and sometimes waiting around in the cold. The Celestron ThermoTorch 5 is a clever 3-in-1 device: a powerful torch for navigating in the dark, a rechargeable handwarmer to keep your fingers moving, and a power bank for topping up your phone or camera battery.

Power on the Go: Portable Charging

Cold weather can drain batteries faster than usual, so carrying extra power is essential. The Hama PD 20 20000mAh Fast-Charge Powerbank gives you plenty of capacity to recharge your devices while you’re out and about. Its fast-charge capability means less waiting and more shooting.

Keep Shooting: Gloves Made for Photographers

Ordinary gloves can make operating a camera tricky, but the PGYTECH Photography Gloves, Professional XL are designed with photographers in mind. They offer warmth, grip, and dexterity, with foldable fingertips so you can adjust camera settings without exposing your hands to the cold for too long.

Final Thoughts

Autumn and Winter photography can be some of the most rewarding of the year – if you’re prepared. With the right accessories, you can protect your gear, stay warm, and keep shooting whatever the weather. Whether you’re planning woodland walks, city nightscapes, or winter wildlife, these essentials will help you capture the season at its best.

As part of our Canon Camera Store Week celebrations for 2025, we were delighted to welcome customers to a special event at the Hawk Conservancy Trust in Andover. The day brought together stunning wildlife, expert guidance from Canon and professional photographer, Oliver Wright, and plenty of opportunities to put cameras and lenses to the test in a truly unique setting.

The Hawk Conservancy, with its beautiful grounds and world-class bird of prey displays, provided the perfect backdrop for the event. From owls gliding silently through the woodland to eagles soaring above the arena, there was no shortage of subjects to capture. The dramatic lighting conditions and fast-moving birds provided participants with the opportunity to test their equipment and skills to the limit. If you have never visited, it is an absolute must.

Learning Through Experience

The day was led by Canon professional photographer, Oliver Wright. His inspiring introductory talk was filled with incredible images of birds he has captured through his lens over the years.
Canon’s technical team joined us for the day, offering demonstrations, advice, and the chance to try out the latest equipment. Many guests took the opportunity to put the Canon EOS R system cameras through their paces, exploring features like advanced autofocus and rapid burst shooting—perfect for tracking birds in flight. There was also a selection of Canon’s famous white long L-series lenses available for everyone to use and enjoy, which allowed some customers to try out their dream lens!

Where to Start in the World of Sony Cinema Cameras

FX3 vs FX2 vs FX30 — A Filmmaker’s Guide to Choosing the Right Sony Cinema Camera

Sony has steadily been building a powerful ecosystem of cinema cameras that range from online content creators, indie filmmakers to Netflix-approved productions.

If you’re wondering where to begin—or how to upgrade—this will be a great read as I will break down the real-world strengths of the Sony FX3, FX2, and FX30, with detailed features, use-case scenarios, and why they matter.

Before we dive into the cameras, we must address the question, Why Choose a Cinema Camera Over a Mirrorless Hybrid in the first place?

Sony have created a huge line up of mirrorless cameras covering full-frame and cropped sensors like the Sony A7IV, A7S III and A6700 which offer amazing video features and outstanding results but they are built for versatility and not for dedicated video, they tend to lack all the truly geeky things like full sized HDMI ports, High end audio ports, timecode, as well as all the internal functions such as high bitrates and cinema codecs, LOG, zebra’s, focus peaking, false colour and shutter angle which are ALL found in video and Cinema line cameras. (I suggest you Google some of those features if you haven’t heard of them before).

For serious video work, Sony’s Cinema Line gives you key advantages:

1. Cinematic Workflow & Colour Science

S-Cinetone & Cine EI Modes: These cameras offer native cinematic colour profiles like S-Cinetone, used in Sony’s high-end VENICE camera, and Cine EI modes for precise exposure control in post.

Better Dynamic Range Management: Especially when shooting in S-Log3, these cameras provide more control over highlights and shadows, crucial for colour grading.

2. Form Factor Optimised for Video

Unlike the hybrid mirrorless cameras (which are designed for both photo and video), cinema bodies like the FX3/FX30/FX2 are made for:

Rigging with cages, monitors, and external recorders.

Top handle recording (included with the FX3/FX30/FX2) with XLR audio inputs.

Active cooling systems to prevent overheating during long shoots.

3. Professional Audio Capabilities

Built-in XLR inputs (via the top handle) allow direct connection of pro microphones without extra adapters or recorders.

Support for 4-channel 24-bit audio recording, which is often missing in mirrorless bodies.

4. Focus on Video-First Features

Timecode Syncing (available in FX3/FX30 via accessories): useful in multi-camera shots or on a large set with many people recording the same scene.

Tally lights, shutter angle, custom LUT previews, and unlimited recording time are small but powerful upgrades.

Dedicated buttons and UI optimised for video operations (e.g., separate still/video modes not needed).

5. Sensor and Codec Optimisation

FX3 and FX2 share the same full-frame sensor as the A7S III, but with:

Improved thermal design = longer, uninterrupted 4K120 recording

Enhanced All-Intra & XAVC-SI codecs for post-production workflows

FX30 offers a Super 35 sensor with cinema features at a lower price point—ideal for indie filmmakers or budget-conscious productions.

6. Longevity & Expandability in Pro Production

Cinema Line cameras are part of a scalable Sony ecosystem: from FX30 → FX3 → FX6 → FX9 → VENICE.

That means easier colour matching, consistent workflows, and shared LUTs or settings across cameras in a multi-cam shoot.

Cinema cameras are purpose-built for delivering the best possible image with the most amount of customisation to be able to suit any solo creator or large production’s needs.

The Big Question is which Sony Cinema camera is right for you: FX3, FX30 or FX2

Here we have three cinema cameras that, from the outside, look very similar, but each one has its unique selling point that may be the perfect fit for you.

Let’s start with the Sony FX30. Why would you buy this camera over the FX2 and FX3?

Sony FX30 with handle, XLR interface and Lens

If you're a filmmaker on a budget or just starting out, the FX30 is arguably one of the best entry points into Sony’s Cinema Line. It brings many professional features at a fraction of the cost — while still delivering excellent image quality.

You get pro-level features like:

S-Cinetone, which is a LOG format.

Cine EI modes are Usually ONLY found in larger, more expensive cameras.

XLR audio (with included top handle)Built-in fan for long recording.

The FX30 has a Super 35mm sensor, which is smaller than the FX2 & FX3, but it has some benefits in being smaller; a smaller sensor gives you more control over depth in your image (this is why cinema cameras like the Arri Alexa Mini choose this size sensor).

Sony FX30 showing its Super 35 APS-C sized sensor

Lenses for this format tend to be more affordable, and if you attach a full-frame lens to this camera, you will achieve a natural magnification, making it ideal for capturing wildlife and sporting events where being up close and in the action isn’t an option.

The FX30 has the same body as the FX3, meaning you can rig these two cameras very similarly and easily swap/interchange them on a gimbal without resetting the gimbal settings.

It has the same ports, button layout, large HDMI port, and CFexpress Type A + SD card slot.

While not as good in low light, the FX30 has excellent autofocus, rolling shutter control, and processing speed, supports Breathing Compensation, Focus Mapping, and Animal/Eye AF from newer firmware.

The FX30 is a great choice if you do not need a full-frame camera and do not wish to spend the extra to go for the FX3. This does however come at a cost elsewhere, as it doesn’t have the native dual iso that the FX3 has, nor will it perform as well as the FX3 in low-light, and unlike the FX3, it does not have the ability to capture photos.

Why choose the Sony FX3 over the FX30 and FX2?

The FX3 has quickly become a favourite with solo filmmakers, YouTubers, wedding shooters, and run-and-gun cinematographers—and for good reason (it was also the main camera used in the movie The Creator on Netflix).

Sony FX3 with XLR interface and Lens

It blends the best of Sony’s full-frame Alpha mirrorless cameras with pro-level cinema features, all in a compact, handheld-friendly form.

If you're looking for full-frame cinematic depth and superior low-light performance in a lightweight body, the FX3 might be the sweet spot.

You get standout features like:

Full-frame sensor for that shallow depth-of-field and excellent low-light capability.

Dual native ISO (800/12,800) that gives you cleaner images in darker environments.

12.1MP sensor optimised for video, not overloaded with resolution, so you get better readout speed and dynamic range.

S-Cinetone, Cine EI, and S-Log3 for cinematic colour grading flexibility.

5-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) with Active mode for smoother handheld shooting.

Top-handle with XLR inputs (included) for pro-level audio without extra gear.

Compact body with excellent thermals (internal fan) for long shoot days.

Photo capability, unlike the FX30 and FX2.

Sony FX3 showing its Full-Frame sized sensor

The FX3 shares the same body design as the FX30, which means you can rig and gimbal these two together effortlessly—great for multi-cam setups. Its full-frame sensor also provides more lens options and gives you more light per pixel, especially useful for event, documentary, and wedding shooters working in natural or low-light.

In comparison to the FX30, the FX3 is stronger in low-light, has better dynamic range, and dual native ISO makes it more flexible in uncontrolled lighting. The addition of photo functionality makes it ideal for hybrid shooters needing high-quality stills on occasion.

Sony FX2 — Why choose this over the FX3 and FX30?

The FX2 is the newest addition to Sony’s Cinema Line, and serves as a powerful hybrid between the compact form factor of the FX3 and the pro-grade image quality of the FX6 (a much more expensive dedicated cinema camera made by Sony).

Sony FX2 showing the EVF in-use

It’s built for cinematographers who need uncompromising image quality, high dynamic range, and robust codec options, but still want a compact, travel-ready package.

One of the biggest key differences of the FX2 is that you get a built-in viewfinder, something the other Sony cameras are missing. Having a viewfinder allows you to shoot in much trickier environments such as bright light, low light and comes in handy when you need to get precise manual focus.

Sony FX2 showing the EVF detail

You get premium-level features like:

6K full-frame sensor downsampled to 4K for sharper, cleaner footage.

16-bit RAW output via HDMI or 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording.

Dual Base ISO (800/4000) for high dynamic range in bright or low-light conditions.

S-Cinetone, S-Log3, Cine EI Quick/Advanced, just like the FX6 and VENICE.

Timecode in/out and Genlock support via the multiport (with adapter) for multi-cam sync.

Currently more robust codecs and recording formats than the FX3 or FX30 (All-Intra, XAVC-I).

A fantastic heat dissipation system for extended recording times in high-res codecs.

Built-in cooling fan and same pro button layout as FX3.

The FX2 is designed for Solo shooters, short films, commercial work, and high-end content creation where colour fidelity, grading flexibility, and pro-level monitoring are crucial.

Sony FX2 in a fully-rigged up configuiration

The FX2 lacks photo capability (like the FX6), so it’s not for hybrid shooters. But if your work is video-first and you care about post-production control, maximum image quality, and features like RAW output, then this is your camera.

It’s the ideal choice when the FX6 is too big, but you still need that cinema-grade performance in a portable, gimbal-friendly form factor.

Getting Started with Printing Your Photographs with Canon Printers and Fotospeed Papers.

There’s something undeniably special about physically holding a photograph you’ve shot in your hands. Whether you're printing for exhibition, sale, or personal satisfaction, producing your own prints is one of the most rewarding parts of photography and completes the full process of capture to output.

Canon’s PRO-310 (A3+) and PRO-1100 (A2+) professional inkjet printers are designed with photographers in mind—offering superb colour accuracy, deep blacks, and the flexibility to print everything from crisp landscapes to fine art portraits. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get started with either printer, plus why Fotospeed inkjet papers are our top recommendation for the job.

Step 1: Set Up Your Canon PRO Printer

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 and PRO-1100 are built for photographers who want gallery-quality prints at home or in the studio. Both are pigment ink-based systems rather than a simple dye-based ink, which offer superior colour, resolution and longevity of the final print.

PRO-310: An A3+ printer using a 10-colour LUCIA PRO ink system. Ideal for high-quality prints up to 13” x 19”.

PRO-1100: A professional A2+ printer featuring a 12-ink LUCIA PRO system, delivering even greater tonal range and subtle colour control up to 17” wide and 3.2m long!

To get started:

Unpack the printer and install the ink tanks and printhead.

Connect the printer via USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi.

Download Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software for colour-managed, full-resolution printing.

Step 2: Calibrate Your Monitor

Whilst not strictly necessary to get a successful print, monitor calibration is essential for fully colour-accurate prints. Without it, what you see on screen may not match what appears on paper. A hardware calibrator (like those from Datacolor or X-Rite Calibrite) ensures you're working from a reliable baseline.

You’ll save time, ink, and paper by avoiding trial-and-error edits.

Step 3: Choose Your Paper – Why Fotospeed?

Paper has a massive influence on the final look of your image—tone, texture, sharpness, and even mood. We recommend Fotospeed papers because they work brilliantly with Canon’s pigment-based inks and come in a wide variety of finishes to suit different photographic styles.

Fotospeed also offer a superb FREE comprehensive ebook that covers the print process from start to finish. We highly recommend you download a copy, as it is very useful to refer to.

Top picks:

PF Lustre 275: Popular all-rounder with semi-gloss finish and rich contrast.

Platinum Baryta 300: Exhibition-grade paper with a traditional darkroom feel.

Signature NST Bright White 315: A matte paper ideal for fine art and portraiture, with a natural tone and elegant texture.

Fotospeed also provides free generic ICC profiles for Canon printers to ensure precise colour reproduction.

Step 4: Install the Correct ICC Profiles

ICC profiles are vital for colour accuracy. They tell your printer how to handle colour on specific papers. Fotospeed have generic profiles for all of their papers on their website, they also offer FREE custom profiles to ensure you are getting the best out of your printer and paper.

Here’s how to use them:

Download the correct profile for your printer and Fotospeed paper from Fotospeed’s ICC library.

Install it (macOS: Library > ColorSync > Profiles, Windows: Right-click > Install).

Use the profile in Canon’s Professional Print & Layout or your editing software when you print.

Step 5: Prepare Your Image for Print

Before printing:

Resize your image to print size at 300ppi.

Use soft proofing to simulate how the print will look on the chosen paper.

Apply output sharpening to compensate for ink spread—especially important on matte papers.

These small steps can make a big difference in the final print.

Step 6: Print with Canon Professional Print & Layout

Canon Professional Print & Layout (PPL) is free software that integrates with Lightroom and Photoshop or runs standalone. It gives you fine control over layout, profiles, and colour management.

When printing:

Select your paper type, ICC profile, and set colour handling to 'Application Managed'.

Choose print quality (we suggest High or Highest for final prints).

Use borderless or bordered options depending on your presentation needs.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Once printed, allow your print to dry for 10–20 minutes before handling or framing. Pigment ink is water-resistant once dry, but it’s still best to handle prints carefully—ideally with cotton gloves to avoid marks.

For archival presentation, mount your prints behind UV glass or store them in acid-free sleeves or boxes.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re printing with the compact Canon PRO-310 or the larger PRO-1100, you’ll gain full creative control over your images—from screen to final print. Paired with Fotospeed’s excellent range of papers, you can achieve gallery-quality results at home, with colour fidelity, texture, and depth that make your work truly stand out.

The Lost Art of Fill-In Flash

In a world obsessed with natural light and bokeh, the humble flashgun has become something of a forgotten hero. But when used properly, fill-in flash can elevate your photos from “nice” to “nailed it.”

Let’s be clear—we’re not talking about harsh, full-power bursts that flatten a subject like a deer in headlights. Fill-in flash is the art of balancing light. It’s about adding just enough pop to lift shadows, sharpen edges, and restore detail without shouting about it. You can use your built-in on-camera flash if it has one or if your camera has a hotshoe you can use an accessory flash, sometimes called a 'flash gun' or a 'speedlite'.

A master of this art is local photographer, Dan from A Billion Clicks Photography who has made Dog Portraits his specialism, check out his Instagram for more examples of this awesome style of photography. We asked him how he went about creating the following Dog Portrait :

Dan from A Billion Clicks Photography – "I used a Canon 11-24mm at 11mm and exposed for the scene, not the subject. This was at the max flash sync speed for my camera which was 1/200th and an aperture of f18 to get the sunstar. In doing so though the subject (his name is Rory and he is a friend's dog) was just a silhouette.

I hand hold a Canon R3 and lens in my right hand and the flash/soft box in my left hand placed directly on top of the camera. I used a Godox ad200 in a soft box right on top of the camera to then light Rory."

So, when should you use fill-in flash?

Think sunny days, strong backlighting, portraits under trees, or any time your subject is half in shadow. That bright summer sun you love? It often casts deep shadows under eyes and hats. A gentle flash set to -1 or -2 EV can smooth all that out beautifully, giving you cleaner, more professional-looking shots.

Midday Sun Portraits: The harsh overhead sun often casts dramatic shadows—deep eye sockets, dark lines around the nose and chin. A gentle flash set to –1 or –2 EV adds flattering light without washing out the scene.

Backlit Scenarios: Shooting against the light? A quick burst fills the silhouette, restoring detail and making your subject pop.

Under Tree Canopies: Dappled shade looks pretty—but skin tones can suffer. Fill flash evened things out and keeps the mood.

Indoor Daylight: Near windows? A fill-flash balances bright highlights with softer ambient light without needing high ISO.

Modern gear makes it easy

Nearly all mirrorless and DSLR cameras support TTL (Through The Lens) metering, and many flashguns let you dial exposure compensation in seconds. Add wireless triggers or compact off-camera units and you've got even more control without lugging a studio’s worth of gear.

TTL Flash: TTL (Through-The-Lens) metering automatically adjusts output—so your flash balance feels natural and subtle. Want more control? Dial in Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC) to fine-tune the effect (-1 to -2 EV for fill-in).

Off-Camera & Wireless Control: Even a basic wireless trigger lets you position the flash off-camera. Try angling it slightly higher or 45° for a subtle, directional effect—this adds dimension without looking staged.

Continuous LED Modeling Lights: Some flash units include LED modeling lamps. They show you exactly where the light will fall, so you can preview and adjust before snapping.

Don't forget the built-in options

Even a built-in pop-up flash can be useful if you dial it down and diffuse it. It's not about power—it's about finesse. Your camera’s built-in pop-up flash can deliver surprisingly nice results—once you learn to dial it down (-1 to -2 EV) and soften the light:

Bounce diffusion: Use a small bounce card or folded paper to scatter light.

DIY diffuser: Stretch a thin white glove or diffuser disc over the flash to eliminate harsh hotspots.

Final tip: balance is everything

Use flash to fill, not dominate. Let ambient light do the heavy lifting, and use your flash to polish the edges. You’ll retain atmosphere and still get detail in the shadows.

Lighting ratios matter: Let ambient light remain dominant—your flash is just supporting.

Shutter speed + sync: Stick with your camera’s maximum flash sync (often ~1/200s or 1/250s); you can also venture into high-speed sync (HSS) for wide apertures in bright light.

White balance: Use “Flash” or set manually to avoid cool or warm mismatches.

The Best Compact Cameras for Every Type of Photographer

In a world dominated by smartphone photography, the best compact cameras still offer superior image quality and features that phone cameras simply can't match. At Castle Cameras, we see how the best digital compact cameras provide greater creative control and specialised capabilities in packages that remain pleasantly portable.

What Makes a Great Compact Camera?

Before diving into specific recommendations, let's quickly explore what features matter most:

Sensor Quality Generally speaking, larger sensors capture better images, especially in challenging lighting conditions.

Lens Performance A quality lens makes all the difference between an ordinary snapshot and a frame-worthy photograph.

Zoom Capabilities While your smartphone might claim impressive zoom, only optical zoom delivers distant subjects without sacrificing quality.

Special Features From underwater capabilities to vlogging-specific functions, today's compacts offer specialised tools for every need.

Size and Weight The perfect compact balances performance with portability for your specific lifestyle.

Now, let's explore our top picks for different types of photographers and budgets.

Best Inexpensive Compact Camera – Yashica City 100

For those entering the world of dedicated photography without breaking the bank, the Yashica City 100 delivers remarkable value. This gem packs all the power and performance you’ve been dreaming of into an incredibly affordable package. What truly impresses us is that it features a 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom, with both auto and manual focus options, providing a fun and enjoyable zoom experience. You can easily get up close to the action without sacrificing clarity, and explore creative angles to perfect your selfies or vlogs with its flip monitor. Consider this your everyday tool for documenting life's moments when you want something more capable than your phone but don't need the complexity of a DSLR camera.

Best Travel Zoom Camera – Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ99

Frequent travellers, take note. The Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ99 combines impressive zoom capabilities with pocket-sized convenience. This travel-friendly marvel features a LEICA DC zoom lens ranging from wide-angle 24mm to telephoto 720mm (equivalent), allowing you to capture sweeping landscapes and distant details without changing lenses. The powerful 20.3-megapixel MOS sensor ensures your travel memories are preserved with stunning clarity and colour, even in challenging lighting conditions. We particularly love the 4K PHOTO feature, which lets you capture the perfect moment by selecting frames from 30fps video sequences and saving them as high-resolution 8-megapixel images. Never miss those fleeting moments again! And when it's time for that obligatory travel selfie, the 180-degree tiltable touchscreen makes framing a breeze. If your photography extends beyond travel, you might want to explore our mirrorless cameras for even more versatility.

Best Vlogging Camera - Sony ZV-1M2

The 20.1MP 1" Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor delivers exceptional image quality, while UHD 4K30p video capabilities with HLG & S-Log3/2 Gammas satisfy even professional-level requirements. We're particularly impressed with the Intelligent 3-Capsule Mic, Real-Time Tracking & Eye AF, and the incredibly useful Product Showcase Setting that automatically shifts focus to objects held up to the camera – ideal for review videos and demonstrations. The side flip-out touchscreen LCD makes monitoring your recordings effortless.

Mirrorless vs DSLR Cameras: Which is Right for You?

So, you’re in the market for a new camera, and the age-old question looms: Mirrorless or DSLR? It’s like choosing between a sleek electric car or a trusty petrol-powered classic – both get you where you need to go, but the journey feels different. At Castle Cameras, we’ve got a great lineup of both DSLR and mirrorless models, and we’re here to break down the technical differences, highlighting some top picks for beginners, enthusiasts, professionals, retro lovers, and even those with a taste for luxury.

What Are The Main Differences Between Mirrorless & DSLR Cameras?

The key distinction between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras lies in their design. DSLRs (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) use a mirror and pentaprism system to bounce light from the lens to an optical viewfinder, giving you a real-time, through-the-lens view. When you press the shutter, the mirror flips up, exposing the sensor. Mirrorless cameras ditch the mirror entirely, sending light directly to the sensor, which projects a digital preview to an electronic viewfinder (EVF) or rear screen. This makes mirrorless cameras lighter, more compact, and often faster, but DSLRs have their own strengths, like longer battery life and a more traditional shooting experience.

Let’s explore how these differences play out across our range, tailored to your skill level and style.

Mirrorless or DSLR?

DSLRs, on the other hand, still appeal to many for their solid build, longer battery life, and the tactile shooting experience of an optical viewfinder. For most modern photographers, especially those valuing portability and innovation, mirrorless is the future. But if you prefer traditional handling and optical performance, a DSLR can still be the perfect fit.

Photographing Animals in Motion

Tips for Capturing Stunning Shots

Photographing animals in motion is a thrilling yet challenging aspect of wildlife and action photography. Whether you’re photographing a bird mid-flight, a cheetah sprinting across the savannah, or your dog in the park, there’s something rewarding about capturing motion in these scenarios. However, mastering these photographs requires the right combination of technical settings, equipment, and technique. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essential tips for photographing animals in motion, focusing on key factors like ISO, aperture, shutter speed and using the right equipment and accessories.

Shutter Speed: The Key to Freezing Action

When photographing animals in motion, using the correct shutter speedis the most important setting to control. It refers to how long your camera’s sensor is exposed to light and how much motion blur will appear in your image. To ‘freeze’ fast-moving animals, you need to use a fast shutter speed. Typically, a 1/1000s shutter speed or faster is recommended for action shots, however, depending on the speed of the subject, you might need to adjust accordingly:

Fast-moving animals (like birds or cheetahs): Use 1/2000s to 1/4000s or faster.

Moderate movement (like a running dog): Try 1/1000s to 1/2000s.

Slower action (like a walking animal): 1/500s should be sufficient.

Another method of using shutter speed is panning, which involves following the subject’s motion with your camera while using a slower shutter speed such as 1/50s (adjust between 1/30s and 1/80s for best results). This produces an image with a sharp subject with a motion blurred background, adding a sense of motion and speed into the still imagery.

When using faster shutter speeds your camera collects less light resulting in darker looking images, therefore you will need to use your aperture and ISO settings to achieve the correct exposure.

Aperture: Balancing Depth of Field and Light

The aperture (measured in f-stops) controls both the depth of field (how much of the image is in focus) and the amount of light entering the lens and therefore the camera. For animal action shots, you’ll want a wider aperture (lower f-number) to create a shallow depth of field, allowing your subject to stand out against the background. This is also beneficial because a larger aperture such as f/2.8 or f/4 gathers more light into the lens creating brighter images.

As mentioned in the previous section, more light entering the lens allows you to use faster shutter speeds and capture faster moving action. Alternatively, a wider aperture allows you to retain a fast shutter speed in dim conditions such as sunrise, sunset or dusk. However, keep in mind that a wide aperture also means less depth of field meaning less of the image is in sharp focus. This means that you will need to make sure your focus is precise. This fine balance between shutter speed and aperture is essential when photographing animals and capturing action in changing lighting conditions.

ISO: Completing the balance

ISO controls your camera’s sensitivity to light. This control allows you to brighten your images when you cannot or don’t want to change your shutter speed or aperture. For example, if you are photographing a dog running at 1/1000s and f/2.8 because you want to capture the action and isolate your subject from the background but the image is still too dark, you can increase your ISO to brighten the image and achieve the correct exposure.

However, like aperture and shutter speed, ISO does come with a drawback. As you increase your camera’s ISO and increase its sensitivity to light, your image will contain more unwanted noise creating grainy looking images. To keep your ISO as low as possible and retain a fast shutter speed you can use a fast lens such as an f/2.8 or f/4. Best practice is to always try and keep your ISO as low as possible to allow for cleaner looking images.

Continuous Autofocus

After managing your exposure settings correctly, another critical feature for photographing moving animals is your camera’s autofocus mode. To keep up with a subject that is constantly changing position, use a continuous autofocus mode:

On Canon cameras, this is referred to as AI Servo.

On Nikon cameras, it’s called AF-C.

This mode allows the camera to continually adjust the focus while the animal is moving. It ensures that even if the subject is running, flying, or swimming, your camera will track the animal, keeping it in focus as you change your framing, zoom in and out or change settings.

Additionally, to capture more images per second, use the fastest shooting speed your camera can handle. This will allow you to shoot multiple frames in quick succession, increasing your chances of capturing the perfect action shot.

Finding the right lens for you

For capturing action, having the right lens is crucial. A telephoto lens is often preferred because it allows you to stay a safe distance from the subject while still getting close-up shots. A 70-200mm f/2.8 or 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens is a popular choice for wildlife and action photographers.

As mentioned in the previous sections, using a lens with a wide maximum aperture such as f/2.8 is ideal as it lets more light into the camera allowing for faster shutter speeds. Using a variable aperture lens such as a f/4.5-5.6, means that you will capture less light as you zoom in, changing your exposure, resulting in you having to keep changing your ISO or shutter speed to compensate for the loss of light. Doing this takes your attention away from the action, meaning that you may miss good shots. However, a lens like this gives you more versatility with a longer focal range.

Therefore, if you are capturing animals at a long to far away distance a 100-400mm lens may be better suited than a 70-200mm lens which gives you a wider aperture but better at medium to long distances.

Essential Accessory Equipment

While having a camera and lens allows you to take your images, having extra accessories can help improve your experience and gets better results:

Tripod or Monopod: If you're photographing larger animals or birds from a distance, using a monopod or tripod can help stabilize the lens and reduce fatigue, especially when using heavy telephoto lenses.

Memory Cards and Batteries: When trying to capture the perfect action shot, you may find yourself shooting hundreds of images, so it’s essential to have spare memory cards and batteries on hand, especially if you’re photographing for extended periods. A faster memory card such as a v60 or v90 speed card will enable your camera to take more images per burst.

Conclusion

Photographing motion can be challenging and a lot to handle, however the results are so rewarding and worth the time spent. Understanding the fine balance between shutter speed, aperture and ISO is crucial for capturing high quality images of animals in motion. Investing in the right gear, from a fast lens to useful accessories, also makes a big difference. But most importantly, patience and practice are key. So, next time you head out to photograph animals, keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to creating stunning images which will be well worth the wait.

Using a Celestron Telescope with a Mirrorless Camera for Deep Space Photography

Connecting your mirrorless camera to a Celestron telescope using a T-ring and adapter.

When you’re ready to move from wide-field nightscapes to deep-sky imaging—capturing nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters—a telescope becomes your best friend. Celestron offers a range of telescopes well-suited for this purpose, and they pair beautifully with mirrorless cameras. Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started:

1. Choose the Right Telescope

For deep space imaging, consider the Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain scopes. These offer long focal lengths and high resolution, ideal for tight celestial targets. Pair them with an equatorial mount like the Celestron Advanced VX (AVX) or CGX for precise tracking.

2. Get the Correct Adapters

To physically attach your mirrorless camera to the telescope, you'll need two things:

T-Ring: A lens mount adapter for your specific camera brand (e.g., Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z).

Celestron Sony T-Ring

Celestron Canon EOS T-Ring

Celestron Nikon T-Ring

T-Adapter: Connects the T-ring to the telescope’s visual back, essentially turning the telescope into a massive telephoto lens.

Celestron T-Mount Adapter for DSLR, 1.25-inch

Bonus: For EdgeHD scopes, consider using a focal reducer to speed up your optics and widen your field of view.

3. Set Up for Prime Focus Imaging

Prime focus is when the telescope acts as the camera lens. Here's how:

Remove the telescope’s eyepiece and diagonal.

Attach the T-ring to your camera body.

Connect the T-ring to the T-adapter.

Mount the whole assembly to the telescope's visual back.

Now your camera is ready to capture photons from deep space—directly through the telescope.

4. Tracking and Guiding

A tracking mount is essential for long exposures and sharp deep sky photos.

Deep space photography requires long exposures—sometimes several minutes. That means you need:

Motorized Equatorial Mount: Align it with Polaris (or the celestial pole in your hemisphere)

Autoguider (optional but recommended): A secondary camera and guide scope help fine-tune tracking to eliminate even the tiniest star drift.

5. Achieving Sharp Focus

Focusing through a telescope is incredibly precise and finicky. Tools like a Bahtinov mask can help you get razor-sharp stars. Live View with focus magnification on your mirrorless camera is also essential.

A Bahtinov mask ensures pinpoint focus on stars—a must for deep sky work.

6. Capture and Stack

Shoot in RAW format for maximum editing latitude.

Take multiple exposures—also known as light frames—and combine them later using stacking software like DeepSkyStacker, Sequator, or PixInsight.

Don’t forget calibration frames (dark, flat, bias) to clean up noise, vignetting, and sensor artifacts.

Stacked and processed deep sky photo, before and after editing.

Final Thoughts

Astrophotography can seem technical at first, but once you’ve dialed in your gear and workflow, it becomes a deeply rewarding part of your photography journey. Whether you're capturing wide-angle shots of the Milky Way with a fast mirrorless lens or revealing the delicate filaments of a distant nebula through a Celestron telescope, each image is a little miracle of light and time.

So grab your camera, head under the stars, and get ready to see the universe in a whole new way.

Astrophotography is a journey—part science, part art, and 100% wonder.

Filters on Your Camera: What They Do?

In the world of photography, filters are often an underrated tool. However, filters can be game-changers, giving you more creative control, enhancing image quality, and protecting your camera’s lens. We’ve put together a breakdown of the different filters available to you.

What Is a Camera Filter?

A camera filter is a piece of optical glass or resin that fits onto the front of your camera lens. Filters can serve a variety of purposes, from manipulating the light entering your camera to achieve a specific effect or style to protecting your lens from dust and scratches. There are a wide variety of filters available, each designed to serve a different function, whether it’s controlling exposure, enhancing colours, or creating dramatic effects.

UV (Ultraviolet) Filters: The Lens Protector

Lets begin with the UV filter. This is primarily used for protection. It blocks ultraviolet light from entering the camera lens, which can cause hazy or blurry images, especially at higher altitudes or in areas with lots of sunlight. While modern digital sensors are less affected by UV light than traditional film, many photographers still use UV filters to protect their lens from dust, scratches, and fingerprints.

Why use a UV filter?

Reduced Haze

Polarising Filters: Control Reflections and Enhance Colours

Polarisers are fantastic for controlling reflections and enhancing colours, especially when shooting outdoors. A Polarising filter works by reducing the glare from reflective surfaces like water or glass, making your photos clearer and more vibrant. It also deepens the blue in the sky and boosts the contrast between the sky and clouds, making landscape shots especially pop. Perfect for the unpredictable UK weather!

Why use a Polarising filter?

Reduce Glare:

Richer Colours

Better Landscapes

ND (Neutral Density) Filters: Control Exposure in Bright Light

Neutral density filters are ideal for managing exposure in bright conditions. They reduce the amount of light entering the lens, allowing you to use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures without overexposing your image. This is particularly useful when shooting in bright sunlight or when you want to create specific effects, like a motion blur in a waterfall or smooth-looking water in long-exposure shots.

Why use an ND filter?

Control Exposure

Create Motion Effects

Shoot at Slow Shutter Speeds

Graduated ND Filters: Balance Light in High-Contrast Scenes

Graduated ND filters are a special type of ND filter that transitions from dark to clear across the filter. These are perfect for landscape photographers who are trying to balance the exposure between a bright sky and a darker foreground. With a graduated ND filter, you can darken the sky to prevent it from becoming overexposed while keeping the foreground well-exposed.

Why use a graduated ND filter?

Balance Exposure

Perfect for Landscapes

Simple and Effective

Circular vs. Linear Polarisers: The Key Difference

When it comes to Polarisers, there are two main types: circular and linear. Both reduce reflections and improve colour saturation, but the difference lies in how they interact with autofocus and metering systems. Circular Polarisers are generally preferred for digital cameras, as they allow the camera’s metering and autofocus systems to function properly. Linear Polarisers, on the other hand, are often used in older film cameras or manual cameras.

Why the difference matters?

Circular Polarisers: Compatible with most digital cameras, they don’t interfere with autofocus or metering.

Linear Polarisers: Used for older camera systems or in manual setups.

We all know the UK weather notoriously unpredictable. One minute, the sun is shining, and the next, you're caught in the rain. The weather can make shooting outdoors challenging, but with the right filters, you can adapt to the ever-changing conditions and still capture stunning images.

For example, when it's bright and sunny, you might want to use an ND filter to avoid overexposure, especially when you’re capturing fast-moving elements like waterfalls or streams. If a shower rolls in, a Polarising filter can help cut through the wet surfaces and give your photos more clarity, especially when shooting reflections in puddles or on wet streets.

Moreover, the lighting during can be quite dynamic on sunrises or sunsets — early mornings can have soft, diffused light, while midday brings harsh sunlight. A graduated ND filter helps balance the light between a bright sky and a darker foreground, which is especially useful when you’re photographing landscapes and nature scenes with that rapidly shifting light.

Conclusion: Filters Are More Than Just Accessories

While filters may seem like an extra investment, they provide a range of benefits that can significantly improve the quality of your photos. From enhancing colours to controlling exposure and reducing reflections, they give you more control over your images and can often achieve results that are difficult or impossible to replicate in post-production.

Whether you're dealing with bright sunlight, spring showers, or the soft light of dawn, filters allow you to adjust to these changing conditions with ease.

The key is to understand the type of filter that best suits your style and shooting conditions. Whether you're capturing a stunning landscape, shooting in bright sunlight, or experimenting with creative effects, there's a filter for almost every photographic need.

If you haven’t already, consider adding a filter or two to your camera gear. It may be the next step in taking your photography to the next level.
